The number one question we’re asked all the time is, “How is J-Beauty different from K-Beauty?” The easiest way to understand the difference between the two is to learn the routine. Contrary to the 10-step K-Beauty routine, J-Beauty is simplified to a 3-step routine. But don’t underestimate the simplicity! Each step is done with the utmost precision and care. Here’s how:

Step 1: Cleanse

Start by removing your makeup with an oil cleanser. Take a small amount of lukewarm water and gently massage the oil cleanser on your face in small circular motions. You’ll see the oil turn to a milky texture. This process called “Nyu-ka” is super important in getting all the makeup out of your pores. After you’ve rinsed thoroughly, you’re ready to wash.

J-Beauty Vocab:
“Nyu-ka”: Emulsification. An important process of transforming oil to a milky liquid which helps remove makeup and dirt in your pores.

Gently wash your face with “Awa” which literally means bubbles. Friction is your skin’s worst enemy. It can be the cause of wrinkles, dark spots and other signs of skin aging. That’s why the Japanese swear by creating the creamiest foam which acts as a cushion between your hands and your skin. It’s almost as if you’re pressing the foam against your pores to remove the unwanted dirt and debris from your pores.

Step 2: Tone

Toning is believed to be the essence of beautiful skin. Take a cotton pad and drench it with hydrating lotion. Apply it on to your skin by gently patting the cotton on your skin with a slightly upward motion as if you’re hydrating each and every pore on your face. When your entire face is perfectly plump you’ve reached “Mochi Hada” status a.k.a your skin’s all set to absorb the nutrients to come in the next step.

Step 3: Nourish & Protect

It’s time to nourish your skin with treatments and serums that tailor to your specific skin condition. Then, lock in all the nutrients and protect your skin with a cream. All the love you gave your skin will mean nothing if you don’t protect it with love. UV rays are the root of most skin problems —dark spots, wrinkles, dryness, you name it. So, if you don’t want your skincare efforts to go to waste, make sure you apply sunscreen every single day.

Nourish and protect skin

Persistence is key to skincare success. Follow these 3 essential steps every day and you’re one step closer to a “Suhada Bijin”.
